As an essayist and a poet, Heather Lanier's work spans a range of subjects, from parenting and disability to pop culture and religion. Her memoir, Raising a Rare Girl, was named a New York Times Book Review Editor’s Choice. She is also the author of three poetry chapbooks along with the full-length poetry collection, Psalms of Unknowing, which Kirkus Reviews calls “a powerful poetic reckoning with motherhood and religion.” She has received an Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award, a Vermont Creation Grant, and a New Jersey Artist’s Fellowship. As a mother and a disability advocate, she shines a light on ableist attitudes, encourages readers to see disability as an aspect of diversity, and marvels at the strange beauty of being human. An educator for over twenty years, she works as an associate professor of writing arts at Rowan University.
