Humera is a cybersecurity student and digital safety advocate with a focus on human-centered security and design. She explores how everyday users interact with technology and how small decisions can have real-world consequences, blending technical insight with a deep understanding of human behavior.

Shaped by her diasporic background, Humera is deeply drawn to global history and art as ways of understanding culture, identity, and shared human experience. She is fascinated by the layers of meaning in both people and creativity, and the ways subtle details reveal what is often unseen.

We often rely on the past and history as shortcuts for understanding people — but those shortcuts are flawed. Why do we feel the need to label people before we allow them to just be? Humera’s talk asks what happens when we stop categorizing, explaining, or reducing others to inherited stories. What if we met people as they are, in the present, alive, complex, and entirely themselves?

I’ve long noticed how easily people are defined by labels: their country, their history, the story others assign before they speak. Growing up with a diasporic background, I realized these inherited narratives often obscure the lives we are actively building. Through storytelling and hand embroidery, I’ve learned to see beauty in layers, in detail, and in what isn’t immediately visible. My talk explores what happens when we stop trying to fit people into stories that aren’t theirs — and instead meet them where they are, fully present and wholly themselves.
