An idea worth spreading
“Your handwriting. The way you walk. Which china pattern you choose. It’s all giving you away. Everything you do shows your hand. Everything is a self-portrait. Everything is a diary.”
— Chuck Palahniuk, Diary
Most of us think of beauty and aesthetics as something external — reserved for artists, designers, or people with a “good eye.” But what if beauty isn’t a luxury or a talent? What if it’s simply the trail we leave behind as we move through the world?
Here’s a simple but transformative idea: Aesthetics shape how we feel, how we behave, and who we become — and every one of us can learn to shape aesthetics back.
We are constantly influenced by our environment: the room we live in, the light we wake up to, the energy of the objects around us. But what we rarely realize is that we have immense agency over that environment. Through small aesthetic decisions — how we dress, what we choose to notice, how we listen, how we set a table — we’re quietly authoring our lives.
I spent years searching for “my thing,” believing beauty was something other people were born with. It wasn’t until working in a gallery, observing artists at work, that I understood: taste is not innate — it is cultivated. You watch, you choose, you refine. And through these choices, you shape your world, your voice, your identity.
Beauty is depreciated in our world of efficiency. But what if beauty, ina broad sense of aesthetics, actually makes you more productive?
When we reclaim beauty as a daily practice — not a performance — we change not only how the world looks, but how we feel inside it.
