And so begins the novel "Tale of Two Cities" by Charles Dickens. The plot of the book, written in 1859, takes place during the turbulent period of the French Revolution. Dickens could have written the same words today about society at the dawn of the millennium. The political, economic and social situation; the emergence of new technologies as a crucible of new ways of thinking and doing, has caused uncertainty and confusion, without anyone making clear whether that particular Bastille is the future, should be cause for hope or despair. The consensus there is only about a contradiction: we live in the best of times for the man and also at worst.
