Mindfulness by Design is an invitation to explore how awareness, intention, and purpose can shape a better future not only in how we build cities and institutions, but also in how we live, learn, create, govern, and relate to one another. Inspired by Bhutan’s Leadership, the development philosophy of Gross National Happiness and the emerging initiative - the Gelephu Mindfulness City, the theme serves as an overarching lens rather than a single subject area. It encourages the exploration of diverse ideas across creativity, technology, climate resilience, education, entrepreneurship, culture, governance, health, and social transformation, asking a simple but profound question: What happens when we design our future consciously rather than by default? “The future is neither unseen nor unknown. It is what we make of it. What work we do with our two hands today will shape the future of our nation...” - His Majesty The King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, The Royal Coronation Address, November 1, 2008. Through this theme, TEDxThimphu 2027 seeks to bring together a rich diversity of voices from Bhutan and beyond to explore the tensions and opportunities of our time: tradition and innovation, happiness and ambition, local identity and global citizenship, resilience and change. At its heart, Mindfulness by Design is about creating space for ideas that are not only intelligent and innovative, but also humane, inclusive, and meaningful. It reflects Bhutan’s belief that progress should enhance human well-being, strengthen communities, and foster harmony between people, society, and nature. TEDxThimphu 2027 aims to be a platform where diverse ideas intersect, challenge assumptions, spark curiosity, and inspire thoughtful action toward a more mindful and compassionate future.
