Tran To Uyen
Co-Founder and Country Director of STEAM for Vietnam Foundation Uyen Tran is a systems-change leader driven by a core belief: human potential is a nation’s greatest asset, and quality education should never be a privilege. From winning Vietnam’s National STEM Award to co-founding STEAM for Vietnam, she has dedicated her career to closing the gap between individual brilliance and collective progress. Her approach emphasizes empowering teachers as multipliers, leveraging AI as an equalizer, and embedding project-based, problem-solving curricula. As Co-Founder and Country Director of STEAM for Vietnam, a U.S. 501(c)(3) non-profit, she has transformed this philosophy into action by designing scalable programs that have reached nearly 1 million learners across all 63 provinces of Vietnam and 33 countries, creating a replicable ecosystem for education reform in emerging nations. Her most ambitious undertaking is the architect of Vietnam's national AI literacy for educators program, aims to train 2 million teachers and reshape learning for 24 million students. Using a proven 3-stage replication model, she piloted AI training individually with 8,500 teachers in 2024, scaled systematically to 17,000 in the remote, 80%-ethnic minority region of Điện Biên, achieving 100% AI-readiness in 60 days, and catalyzed 50,000 nationwide registrations, demonstrating scalability potential. To support this nationwide scale-up, in partnership with Meta, she developed STEAMese AI, Vietnam’s first multi-agent, OctoAI, in compliance with MOET guidelines for curriculum-aligned lesson planning, grading, and personalized learning, serving as a key enabler for nationwide and regional expansion. Building on a proven, replicable model and anchored by a coalition of global partners, experts, and local communities—including Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.), Scratch Foundation, UNICEF, Meta, the US Embassy, and Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST). STEAM for Vietnam’s impact builds on earlier innovation. In 2020, Uyen launched STEAM for Vietnam’s first Computational Thinking course, igniting STEAM learning for 5,000 students, many of whom were admitted to top universities like Carnegie Mellon and NUS for computer science, positioning them as future global innovators. In 2023, for the first time in history, STEAM for Vietnam brought 19 teams with over 100 Vietnamese students to the United States to compete in the world’s largest robotics competition, VEX Worlds, creating a new pathway to global competitiveness. She has also mobilized and managed a cross-functional team of over 600 staff and volunteers globally to execute large-scale educational programs. Her work has earned significant global recognition. She has been featured in a TEDx Talk, where she presented the nationwide AI literacy initiative for educators, sharing insights on scaling education innovation. In 2024, she was personally named one of the Top 100 Most Influential Vietnamese Leaders Worldwide at the Vietnam Global Leaders Forum, affirming her role as a visionary in education and innovation. Under her leadership, STEAM for Vietnam achieved distinguished organizational honors, including recognition as an MIT Solve Finalist, selection as one of 30 leading global organizations in the AI for Changemakers Accelerator powered by Tech To The Rescue, Google.org, and Lenovo, and the distinction of being the only Vietnamese organization among six participants in the Lenovo AI for Social Impact Lab. Uyen’s career blends global tech scale and STEM excellence. She helped launch Disney+ to 100M+ users, rolled out Techcombank’s mobile app to 14M+ users, and led American Red Cross outreach in New York. Earlier, she won First Prize at Vietnam’s Science and Engineering Fair, represented the country at Regeneron ISEF, and earned a full scholarship to Iona University, graduating with dual honors degrees in Finance and Mass Communication while making the Dean’s List for four years. She previously served as Vice President of the Vietnamese Youth and Students Association in California, USA (2019).
