Young people today face all kinds of pressures—schoolwork, friendships, family expectations, and more. But one challenge that often goes unspoken is appearance anxiety, which sometimes can lead to stress, teasing, or even cyberbullying. With social media and AI making it easier than ever to compare ourselves to others, many feel even more pressured to match unrealistic standards. That’s why we’ve chosen “This Is Me” as the theme of our event. This will be a space for high school students to share their stories, their struggles, and their perspectives on how appearance impacts their lives. We’ll also hear about the courage it takes to stay true. While we had hoped to invite some professionals in the conversation, unforeseen circumstances happened. So this time the spotlight will remain fully on the students themselves. And perhaps that is fitting—their voices, their courage, and their insights can inspire us all.

  • Joanna Liao

    My name is Joanna Liao. Currently I am a Grade 11 student at Jiangsu Tianyi High School in China. I like singing and dancing very much. I have tried a wide range of dance styles and song genres. I extremely enjoy my time on the stage as I shine in the way I want and comfortable with. I like watching horro films and listening to creepy stories as well because I once belived that I can build up my courage through these things. I am interested in metaphysics, whether in western or eastern. I believe that doing one good deed every day will bring you good luck.

    Heyyyy! My name is Katherine, an international high school student based in China who's passionate about philosophy and the ways it can be lived in everyday life. Beyond academics, I love outdoor sports, music, and exploring how culture and technology shape who we are. I believe confidence is not about denying our emotions, but about embracing them, being real, and learning to grow with them. One of my favourite artist Lana Del Rey’s music often reminds me of that fragile yet powerful balance. I hope my words encourage others to see beauty not as perfection, but as truth lived out loud.

    I am currently a high school student passionate about neuroscience and public health. Over the past few years, I have been exploring these interests through research projects, such as investigating how teenager’s personality traits online gaming behaviors, and composing a magazine about rare diseases. Beyond academics, I also volunteer regularly at the Wuxi Welfare Center, where I spend time with disabled an experience that has shaped my perspective on empathy and equality in healthcare. Outside of research and service, I love watching films and listening to Hip Hop music, which inspire me to think about human emotions and storytelling. I hope others can see me as someone who values curiosity, empathy, and the pursuit of knowledge that creates meaningful change.

    Hello everyone! My name is Deng Miaoxi, and my English name is Daisy. I'm a female international student in Grade 11 at Jiangsu Tianyi High School. You can reach me at daisydeng1117@sina.com I'm really passionate about sports. I can play tennis, baseball, badminton, and golf. Besides sports, I also love painting traditional Chinese paintings and playing the piano. I consider myself an open - minded and inclusive person. I'm always brave enough to try new things. Traveling is one of my favorite activities because it allows me to deeply understand the cultures and customs of different countries. Moreover, I firmly believe that setting clear goals for myself and making good use of tools are of great importance in both study and life.

I am interested in humanities, education, and social sciences, especially topics related to education, international relations and global society. In my free time, I enjoy watching movies, exploring different cultures, and interacting with different animals, nature, and children. One of my strengths is that I am dedicated and reflective—I like to think deeply about the world around me and how I can contribute to it. My personal goal is to study in the United States in the future and prepare myself for a career where I can both help people and make a meaningful impact on society.

    I am a boy who really enjoys all kinds of extreme sports, like deep diving, surfing and snowboarding , and this point makes me unique. What I search for during all kinds of these experience is to feel the heart beat, the feeling that blood goes through my body, making me feel I’m alive and that excited brain enables me to react quickly and see the details in the world clearly. Even if it seems it’s dangerous to take these sports, I still know that human is to small compared to the world. Like when diving, I could only go with the current and feel the frequent of it. I like to get close to the power of nature like this so much, even if it seems too formidable to me. If I can choose a way to pass away in the future, I would like to go with the nature in these sports, because I love the power of it so much and I know maybe the nature could bbe the best home for me.

    I have many hobbies,and what I like most is watching the talk shows,because I like and enjoy the art of the words when I am watching these TV programs.What’s more,I like playing badminton to find ways to relax and recharge even when I just came through a hard day.In my opinion,what I am good at is playing the piano and making the speech.I think they are similar to each other,because both of them is to pass things to the audiences.One is the happiness,and one is my own ideas. What I am most willing to share about me is my lifetime target.I want to change the world I am living in,no matter how small the change is.I think that may be the most important reason why I take part in this activity.What’s more,I want to share my motto.It is from an advertisement called Just do it,because I think our lives should be a wide field instead a narrow road.We shouldn’t be limited by others’ opinion.What we should do is just to follow our heart all the time.Anyway,it is we who shape our lives.

    I am Yunchen Xie, a student from the AP center of Jiangsu Tianyi High School. I have hobbies such as drawing, playing the piano and singing. There are two skills that I want to share: the capability of good self-expression and the strong listening skills. Good self-expression helps me convey ideas clearly and confidently, making communication effective, while strong listening skills let me truly understand others’ needs and feelings, laying a solid foundation for smooth interaction. My personal philosophy is to promote respect and equality among people, as well as people's attention to other species and the natural environment.

    I am Charles Wu from Jiangsu Tianyi High School, Wuxi, China. I am a student now. I am a boy who likes sports and travelling. I like playing badminton and sailing, which can bring me a sense of motion and exuberance. I like Biology too. I plan to study Biology in the USA in the future. I also want the audience to learn about my personal values regarding appearance anxiety. I think people should pay attention to their inner beauty more rather than judging by appearance.
