Komal Panda
Her story didn’t begin in a lab or a studio, but in loss, responsibility, and a quiet wish to ease the lives of those she loved. Losing her mother in 2021 and watching her father struggle with diabetes during long hours at his factory reshaped her understanding of care. It also revealed a truth she couldn’t ignore: design could restore dignity where life had taken it away. Art was her first language, but purpose found her later at the National Institute of Design, Haryana. There, a single observation changed everything, her father rushing home daily just to refrigerate insulin because his workplace lacked proper facilities. It led her to a question that became her compass: “Why should survival depend on privilege?” Fueled by empathy and necessity, she developed a compact portable device capable of safely cooling insulin and other temperature-sensitive medicines even without electricity, Novocarry. Simple in form yet profound in impact, it offered something millions quietly needed: the freedom to carry essential medication without fear. Her work earned national recognition in 2024 with the James Dyson Award (India). More recently, she represented India at WorldSkills Asia Taipei 2025 and won a bronze, a testament not only to her skill, but her commitment to real-world solutions. As she looks ahead, her hope is clear: that such innovations become accessible to every household that depends on cold-chain medicine, turning thoughtful design into everyday protection for those who need it most and contributing to a Viksit Bharat where healthcare is not a privilege, but a promise fulfilled.
