• Bernhard Fassl

  Professor of Global Health and Director of the Center for Global Health Innovation at Northeast Ohio Medical University

  Dr. Fassl is Professor of Global Health and Director of the Center for Global Health Innovation at Northeast Ohio Medical University. A pediatrician and academic leader with over 20 years of experience, he has advanced maternal-child health and health systems improvements both here in the U.S. and in resource-limited settings across the globe. Previously, he served as Associate Dean for Global Health Innovation at the University of Utah, leading international efforts in medical device development, digital health, and education. His work on Helping Babies Breathe has become a global standard in newborn care, saving lives in over 100 countries. At NEOMED, Dr. Fassl continues to pioneer innovations in frugal technology, global partnerships, and health systems transformation—from mobile health solutions to improving asthma care across hospital networks. His career reflects a deep commitment to equity, collaboration, and innovation in healthcare delivery worldwide.

• Ellen Davis

  Medical Student

  Ellen Davis is a fourth-year medical student at NEOMED and a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army through the Health Professions Scholarship Program. She earned her undergraduate degree in Biology from Bowling Green State University, where she also competed on the equestrian team. Ellen is now pursuing psychiatry, a field where she aims to make an impact on mental health care. She’s also an avid runner, with several marathons—and even an ultramarathon—under her belt.   Maya Deeb is the Administrative Coordinator for the College of Graduate Studies at NEOMED

• Mustafa Houmsse

  Medical Student

  Mustafa Houmsse is a future physician, innovator, and humanitarian currently pursuing his Doctor of Medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University. He holds a master’s degree in Biomedicine Innovation from NEOMED and a bachelor’s from The Ohio State University. His research includes designing novel cardiovascular device coatings—work recognized with a Best in Business award at the University of Utah’s Bench to Bedside Competition.” “Beyond the lab, Mustafa co-founded NEOMED’s Syrian American Medical Society chapter and has been a mentor, tutor, and volunteer, providing care in underserved communities.
