Guyub (n.) - A community’s collective sense of compassion and responsibility; aligning the needs of friends and neighbors with one’s own needs; sharing the joys and sorrows of many lives as one. Guyub, an ancient Javanese philosophy, represents the unfailingly relevant values of communal togetherness, social tolerance, and mutual collaboration. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, we face a growing need to return to the timeless principles of guyub. Jakarta faces various challenges too great for any one individual - from being a rapidly sinking megacity to its local health crisis. By examining the ideas that guyub reflects in 21st-century Jakarta, we can find new ways to invigorate and celebrate the city’s spirit of dynamism, diversity, and cooperation.
