TEDx Resilience Shift explores Resilient Leadership for our uncertain world and how learning from the Covid crisis supports climate action Join us at TEDx Resilience Shift to launch the Resilient Leadership: Learning from Crisis report featuring the inspiring lessons learned and emerging insights from the Resilient Leadership project following in real-time the challenges of 12 senior leaders of global corporate organisations and cities over 16 weeks of the Covid-19 pandemic. The event brings together participants along with curated content from the global launch of TED Countdown (on 10 October 2020) that sets out the urgent need for transformational change to keep us on a path to Net Zero while building a safe, sustainable and resilient world. The report features lessons learned and insights into resilient leadership, explanation of the reflective learning methodology and the impact for the senior leaders taking part, and the journey of our participants over 16 weeks of the pandemic, in their own words. Hosted by Dr Juliet Mian, Technical Director of The Resilience Shift programme, and infrastructure resilience expert, the panel of senior leaders from global corporates and cities will give a personal testimonial sharing the challenges of the pandemic, what they learned from participating in the project, and how reflective learning has helped them to ‘lean in’ to resilience. Panellists are: Tom Lewis, President, Federal Programmes and Logistics, WSP, USA Barbara Humpton, CEO, Siemens USA Piero Pelizzaro, Chief Resilience Officer, City of Milan, Italy Dr Adriana Campelo, Director of Resilience, City of Salvador, Brazil They will be reunited with Peter Willis, facilitator and expert listener, who interviewed the 12 participants each week over 16 weeks of the Covid-19 pandemic, following their ups and downs in real-time. Peter will lead a discussion on the transformational change we look for from our leaders. We need our leaders to have the capability to steer us through this time of deep uncertainty and critical decision-making while demonstrating their own personal and professional resilience and while building more resilience in their teams and organisations.   • Barbara Humpton

    CEO Siemens USA

    Prior to becoming CEO for Siemens USA in June 2018, Barbara worked extensively with the U.S. Federal Government through her positions with Siemens Government Technology, Booz Allen Hamilton, and Lockheed Martin, primarily with national security agencies. A mathematician by training, she has served on several boards and is passionate about technology “expanding what’s humanly possible”, STEM education, diversity, and her work-life blend as a CEO and a grandmother. Siemens USA is the company’s largest market, doing a quarter of its global business with a workforce of over 50,000 employees across 15 states, D.C., and Puerto Rico. Siemens’ businesses in the US span infrastructure, power generation and management, mobility, industrial modernisation and medical solutions.

  • Dr Adriana Campelo

    Director of Resilience, City of Salvador, Brazil

    Adriana holds a PhD in Marketing Management from University of Otago in New Zealand, a Masters in Management from Federal University of Bahia in Brazil, a Specialization in Economics from University Unifacs in Brazil, and a Law Degree from the Catholic University of Salvador in Brazil. Prior to her current role, Adriana worked for the State Government of Bahia as Coordinator of the Automotive Industry, and for the City of Salvador, as Director of Labour and Professional Qualification; Deputy Secretary for Economic Development, Labour and Employability; and Senior dvisor for the Secretariat of Sustainable City and Innovation. She lived and worked between New Zealand and the UK for ten years and was a lecturer and researcher in marketing at Cardiff Business School in the UK from 2012 to 2015. She has published in international peer reviewed journals and edited the ‘Handbook on Place Branding and Marketing’.

  • Dr Juliet Mian

    Deputy Executive Director and Technical Director, The Resilience Shift

    Dr Juliet Mian is an infrastructure resilience expert with many years of experience on a wide range of infrastructure projects. She is Deputy Executive Director of The Resilience Shift, and Associate Director at Arup. As technical lead of The Resilience Shift global programme to accelerate the resilience of critical infrastructure, she steers grant making, convening and thought leadership in the theory and practice of resilience, contributing to a safer world. She has contributed to numerous technical guides and reference books, as well as research reports, podcasts, and articles. She also presents at numerous events and platforms, as speaker, workshop host, or panellist. Juliet’s passion for sustainability comes through a resilience lens. She believes that decarbonisation and resilience must be delivered hand in hand. With her work at The Resilience Shift, she aims to motivate and create behaviour change for all those working in critical infrastructure.

  • Peter Willis

    Expert Listener, Conversations that Count

    Originally from the UK, Peter has spent 25 years in Cape Town teaching, facilitating and advising at executive and board level on strategic issues of sustainability. Previously Africa Director of the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, he facilitates strategic conversation through Conversations that Count and the Cape Town Drought Response Learning Initiative, among others. He is project leader of the Resilient Leadership initiative for The Resilience Shift.

  • Piero Pelizzaro

    Chief Resilience Officer, City of Milan, Italy

    Piero has 10 years of experience in climate change policies and urban resilience planning, and for the past two and half years has been Milan’s Chief Resilience Officer, reporting to the Mayor. He also leads the city’s work within the European Commission’s Sharing Cities programme. He is an advisor to the Italian Ministry of Environment Land and Sea on Urban Adaptation Policy to Climate Change. Piero has Bachelors and Masters degrees in International Relations from the University of Bologna and a Professional Masters in Green & Blue Infrastructure. Milan was one of the original epicenters for COVID-19 outside of Asia and went into lockdown March 8th, a strategy that has been copied by many nations since then.

  • Tom Lewis

    President, Federal Programmes and Logistics, WSP, USA

    Tom has a BSc and MSc in Civil Engineering from University of Connecticut and a Doctorate of Jurisprudence (JD) with focus on environmental law/regulation. He is a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) and has passed the bar in a number of states in the US. He has 34 years of technical and management experience, with the Connecticut Department of Transport, Dewberry and most recently, 27 years with Louis Berger, where he was the founding president of Louis Berger U.S. There he led the company’s environmental practice and founded the emergency and disaster management, recovery, and resiliency practice. In December 2018, after WSP acquired Louis Berger, Tom was asked to create and lead WSP USA’s new Federal Programs & Logistics (FP&L) group, with the intention of expanding the company’s emergency and disaster management offering in the federal market. WSP has nearly 44,000 employees in over 500 offices scattered around 40 countries.
