Encapsulating the beliefs and ideals guiding its members, the mantra of TedxBj2ms, “Beyond the Wall”, strives to “break down” the often-invincible walls separating people from one another. Founded by five students that cannot bear to live boring and ordinary lives, TedxBj2ms believes in a twofold idea. First, everyone clearly follows the various rules/laws formed by their surrounding invisible societal walls. These rules/laws, developed by common sense, experience, and morality, provide a stable and safe manner in which to live, but they can also lead to boredom, and a lack of adventure. TedxBj2ms believes walking beyond the wall will enable individuals to become unique (physically or mentally), taking risks and understanding potential crises. In fact, the word, ‘crisis’, in Chinese, can be understood to mean “dangerous” and “opportunity”. Second, TedxBj2ms believes that misunderstandings between people are too often created by these walls, and “breaking down” these walls will metaphorically symbolize the dissolution of future estrangement. TedxBj2ms strives to build sound relationships among people while providing opportunities of discourse through safe forums.
