• Jared Paty

  Ever since his exchange to Switzerland in grade ten, it was clear that Jared Paty’s education would follow the path less traveled. A number of experiences followed that blended a thirst for travel and adventure with a solid educational foundation. A year aboard a tall ship. A year living abroad. Visits to volunteer in West Africa and conduct research in India. 37 countries and 6 continents, all while getting a high school diploma and completing degrees in Biochemistry and Global Health. One thing is clear – his education has definitely not followed the beaten path. Now a medical student at McMaster University in Hamilton, Jared will be sharing some of the experiences that have brought him to where he is today.

• Pam Stoneham

  Pam Stoneham is the Associate Dean at Durham College for the School of Skilled Trades, Apprenticeship and Renewable Technology and for the Centre for Food. She manages the day-to-day academic activities at the Whitby Campus. She works with the Dean towards a strategic vision for the school and assists in the future development of programs and partnerships. She supports faculty and students with her curriculum development expertise, knowledge of skilled trades and passion for life-long learning.

• Sam Hassall

  "For as long as I can remember, anything related to engineering has completely captivated me, and I’ve made it the main focus of my life. I believe that expanding humanity’s reach into (and out of) the solar system of one of the only permanent solutions to the problems of overpopulation and resource depletion, and we’re currently at what some people would call a renaissance in Space technology. My biggest goal is to walk on Mars before I die, but if I have to, I’ll settle for designing the systems that take us there." Last year Sam participated in a NASA competition where he teamed with other, much older, space enthusiasts to write a space mission report. Sam and his team won first place amongst many other participants. With his first place victory, Sam won a trip to D.C, to go visit the Goddard space centre.

• Milton Tjin

  Having spent more than 20 years not working in the field that he graduated with, Milton has come to understand that education alone, is not the determinant of success. Having gone to both University of Toronto and then to Centennial College to obtain his Accounting and Financial Management Diploma, Milton has spent almost his whole career in the consumer goods industry. He is now a partner at United Sales and Marketing; a company that brings household products to market. Milton will share what he learned on his unpredictable journey and provide his perspective on education and what the real lessons were.

• Mary Bone

  A charitable sector professional with 25 years of experience, Mary settled with Habitat for Humanity Durham in February 2008.Having worked with 1 International charity, The Starlight Children’s Foundation and 1 National charity The Canadian Centre for Abuse Awareness, choosing Habitat seemed like a natural fit, a grassroots charity with an International appeal.Prior to her charitable career, Mary’s profession was in education within the college sector. After training in the computer industry and achieving her educational goal as a Computer Software Specialist, and as a Systems Analyst being able to impart information to others was at the time her true passion. “Working with people has always been key, the cognitive moment is still one of my favourite things to witness.”

• Alissa Sallans

  Alissa Sallans, a grade 11 French immersion student at Sinclair Secondary School, is a firm believer in learning through doing. Throughout her life, she has actively sought out experiential learning opportunities–including volunteering; participating in conferences, workshops, and summits; facilitating workshops; public advocacy work; and travelling. This past Christmas, Alissa’s passion for the environment led her to participate in a learning expedition to Antarctica with an organization called Students on Ice. During the interactive expedition, Alissa learned from experts in a diverse array of fields about this fragile continent. A student of the greatest classroom on Earth, she is now eager to share what she saw and what she learned.

• Sarah Abdelmassih

  Sarah Abdelmassih is a recent graduate of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. Her research focus has been on the characterization of proteins in parasitic worms in order to develop new anti-parasitic pharmaceuticals. These parasitic worms severely infect livestock in Africa and Asia, resulting in their death. Sarah is working further to complete her Master’s Degree in a parasitology lab for the development of these new anti-parasitic pharmaceuticals. This research will have high impact in third world countries and in our home nation due to the high rate of global trade of livestock today.

• Pat Foran

  Pat Foran is an award-winning journalist who has worked for three different CTV affiliates since 1986. Currently,Foran is the host of a popular feature segment on CTV Toronto called “Consumer Alert" Prior to working as CTV’s Consumer Advocate, Foran was a reporter covering many of the high profile stories of the day including the Paul Bernardo trial, as well as interviewing Sarah Ferguson, Wayne Gretzky and John Candy. He’s been recognized with an Atlantic Journalism Award and Peel Police Award. Foran is also an advocate for financial literacy and was asked to serve on the Federal Government’s Financial Literacy Task Force from 2009-2011.
