TEDxYouthBuildCharterSchool celebrates those educators, educational allies, students, social leaders, and communities who are actively involved in a collaborative effort to reclaim public education as a tool for the improvement of socio-economic conditions and for the enfranchisement of young people as agents for change within their communities (and within a democratic society). It provides a means for launching a new campaign for radically rethinking public education – not just focusing on pre-existing roadblocks like standardized assessment, evaluation, or discriminatory funding structures, but on the structure of American public schooling in its entirety. Among the critical questions asked throughout this event include the following: How does one de-centralize standards and make school not simply a place to learn but to grow? How do we cultivate an environment wherein students are given the tools and the opportunity to become high-functioning, invigorated, critical members in a democratic society?

  • Frankie Gonzalez

    Francisco Gonzalez, also known as Frankie, describes life before Antelope Valley YouthBuild (AVYB) as broken and directionless. Through this new educational environment, he has felt supported through ongoing troubles – especially as he experienced a difficult foster home situation. He has since developed a sense of independence and has become a leader for himself and others.

  • Patrisse Cullors

    Patrisse Cullors is a native-born Angeleno and identifies as an artist, organizer, and freedom fighter. She is currently the founder and Executive Director of Dignity and Power Now, and is building a coalition to help ​fight for civilian oversight of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department and ​promote public awareness around issues in the upcoming election of a new County Sheriff.

  • David Flores, Jr.

    David Flores, Jr. is a third year teacher at YouthBuild Charter School of California (YCSC). In his first year of teaching, David was recognized as Teacher of the Year, 2011-2012. During the 2012-2013 academic year, YouthBuild USA (YBUSA) selected him to participate in their Teachers Fellows program. As a Teachers Fellow, David was 1 of 17 educators selected from across the nation to help improve the teaching and learning experiences of educators and students across the YBUSA network. David’s commitment to and passion for youth has garnered him an invitation to speak at venues that include UCLA’s Royce Hall, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and Staples Center.

  • Maritza Galvez

    Maritza Galvez is a Leader at the Youth Justice Coalition (YJC) and one of the founders of FREE LA High School, the high school program at YJC. YJC is working to build a youth-led movement to challenge race, gender, and class inequality in Los Angeles County’s, California’s, and the nation’s juvenile injustice systems. Maritza experienced the juvenile and criminal injustice systems first-hand and also witnessed the impact of police and prisons on family and community; YJC represents one of the nation’s few organizing and public policy projects lead by people who have been impacted by mass incarceration. Maritza is a graduate of FREE LA High School and currently attends Santa Monica College. She is a youth organizer and Board member at YJC.

  • Jeanelle Urbina

    Jeanelle Urbina is a member of Antelope Valley YouthBuild (AVYB); she enrolled in September 2013 with 89 credits and will be graduating in June 2014. While attending her previous school, Jeanelle realized that her particular educational experience was not impacting and transforming her life the way she thought a great education should. Through AVYB she conducts herself as a model citizen and also as a productive young adult who has gained many useful, meaningful life skills. At AVYB she has been supported by the SMART program, was recently accepted into the Department of Labor’s YouthBuild program, and will be completing her certification as a Nursing Assistant. This certification is the foundation for her future profession as a Licensed Vocational Nurse.

  • Phil Matero

    Phil Matero is a recognized leader in the national movement to improve opportunities for quality education available to youth who have not been well-served by the traditional education system. Phil launched YouthBuild Charter School of California (YCSC) in 2008 to cultivate collaborative learning communities in which every student has the right to an authentic education, plays a meaningful role in creating positive social change, and becomes an active participant in working towards just conditions for all. He has consulted for YouthBuild USA, YouthBuild International, US Peace Corps, the National Youth Employment Coalition, and other projects where he offered his expertise in social justice, youth development, and socially equitable and sustainable education.

  • DeShanette Parker

    DeShanette Parker, born in Reno, Nevada, is 21 years old and mother to a beautiful daughter, Irie. She is a graduating senior at Compton YouthBuild. She loves music, art,dance, poetry, and writing. In the future, De’Shanette plans to open a business to show young adults the ropes of multiple industries so they develop a working knowledge of their preferred fields. She also intends to build a community of homes for the less fortunate in the hopes of giving them foundation and guidance with no age limit. Be the change.
