Every minute somewhere in Europe, a house is demolished — along with the memories and sense of community it holds, says architect Olaf Grawert. Exposing the human and environmental cost of demolition for profit, he highlights a bold alternative that could address the growing housing crisis. Learn how rethinking the value of the buildings we already have could create sustainable, affordable homes for millions and reshape the future of cities.

Why are we demolishing homes during a housing crisis?

Every minute, a house in Europe is torn down not by disaster but by economic calculation, erasing memories and communities for profit. With buildings accounting for 38 percent of global CO2 emissions and the bulk of waste, this cycle deepens the housing crisis and environmental damage. Real estate speculation values only price, ignoring the deeper worth in lived spaces. Renovating existing buildings offers a practical, sustainable alternative that strengthens communities and slashes costs.

Demolishing Homes Fuels Crisis and Wastes Irreplaceable Value

Modern real estate profits drive the demolition of a house every minute in Europe, erasing not just buildings but memories and community ties. This cycle ignores the true social and ecological costs, while the construction sector produces 38 percent of global CO2 emissions. Reimagining existing buildings as valuable heritage, rather than mere commodities, offers a path toward more affordable, sustainable cities. Proven renovation models can improve lives, cut waste, and challenge the systems keeping demolition as the default.
