Bio

Anne Fitzgerald is Cineplex Inc.’s Chief Legal Officer, overseeing legal, corporate affairs, governance and insurance matters for the company since January 2005. She serves on the Executive Committee and is actively involved in the strategic planning for this dynamic and diverse company. Prior to joining Cineplex, she practiced law in both Canada and the US in areas of corporate, commercial, securities, criminal and entertainment law. In addition to practicing law, Anne has also held the position of Associate Professor with Duke University teaching Leadership Studies and has produced live theatre both in the US and in Canada. Anne is currently a member of the Board of Directors for each of the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television (serves on the Audit Committee and chairs the Governance Committee), the National Association of Theater Owners (serves as the Canadian representative on the Globalization Committee) and the Movie Theatre Association of Canada (Vice Chair). Anne was named the National Post/ZSA General Counsel of the Year in Mid-Market Excellence in 2014, having twice before been a finalist for the same award. Having led a number of expeditions for youth leadership development in remote parts of the world, she was inducted as a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographic Society in 2012. Anne holds an undergraduate degree in Public Policy Studies as well as a Juris Doctorate from Duke University. She attended the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government for leadership studies, where she received a certificate in leadership studies. She is currently licensed to practice law in Ontario and North Carolina and holds the ICD.D designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors of the University of Toronto, Rotman School of Management. Outside of her work life, Anne volunteers her time and expertise as a member of the Board of Directors of Outward Bound Canada (“OBC”) where she is Chair of the OBC Cabinet, having been the fortunate beneficiary of Outward Bound experiences in her youth. She is particularly engaged in the OBC Women of Courage program, helping survivors of physical and sexual assault find their own voice through wilderness challenges. Her personal experiences and her prior work as a prosecutor focusing upon domestic homicide cases has provided Anne with a lens through which to view challenges faced by women managing violence in their lives. She cares deeply about this work and will continue to focus on opening doors to help others who face such challenges. Anne also serves as a member of the Duke University Divinity School Board of Visitors, providing guidance to the University in its education theological reach. Although being born in the southern United States and deeply engrained in her family of origin, Anne married a Canadian in 2002 and became a citizen as quickly as she could and is now a proud Canadian embracing her new home. On an annual basis, she organizes a group of 40-50 people to join her in hiking in the Canadian mountains to celebrate the beauty of the Canadian outdoors.
