Bio
I have taught theatre and directed for the stage for more than 30 years. I possess skills in event and festival planning. I am keenly interested and have experience in international education, particularly focused on Russia, China and Japan. I worked for several years to get a sustainable, yet traditional, Japanese garden built on our campus; however, the project was canceled.
I'm passionate about
Fostering civility and tolerance. Teaching students that a pluralistic society is not only acceptable but preferable.
An idea worth spreading
I recently arranged for Roger Ames, PhD (prof. of philosophy, Confucian and Daoist scholar) from the U. of Hawai'i, to speak on our campus about Confucianism and what it has to teach us about civility, morality, social support systems, foreign policy, etc. He is a great trans-disciplinary speaker; my colleagues, from all departments, were THRILLED with his talk at our all-faculty meeting. He should be invited to do a TED talk! You can see a bit of the kind of thing he does here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwTSmAjlPKo This is one of six segments of a lecture he did at a new German higher education institute.
