Bio
An emerging bright talent to the world of new and improvised music, New York based trumpeter and composer Stephanie Richards is rapidly establishing a place for herself as a fresh voice. From marching the plazas of Lincoln Center with Bang On A Can’s Asphalt Orchestra (Voted “Best in Classical 2009” by the Philadelphia Inquirer), to international broadcasts with hip-hop artist and Grammy winner Kanye West, to a recent solo trumpet debut at Carnegie Hall, Stephanie is orchestrating a unique creative trajectory. She is winner of the International Trumpet Guild Young Artist Award, has earned first prize in both the National Canadian Music Competition and the National Kiwanis Festival, is a McGill University Fellowship recipient, and was awarded the prestigious Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music.
Stephanie Richards is a new music improvising musician and composer aiming for honest musical expression with disregard of convention meanwhile embracing a soft spot for kitchy juxtaposition of genres. Stephanie’s current focus is on the theatrics of performance spaces, and site-specific compositional performance. She is passionate for multi-disciplinary composition, commission and collaborations, always conscious of the visual existence of any performance.
Stephanie is constantly searching for new techniques on the trumpet as mode of expression, and enjoys improvising and collaborating with artists ranging from puppeteers to comedians to chefs.
