2017 TED Prize Winner Dr. Raj Panjabi is a physician, entrepreneur and former senior White House official. He is a distinguished authority in health care, biotechnology, entrepreneurship, national security and public health. Raj is Senior Partner at Flagship Pioneering, a Cambridge based firm that invents and builds companies that change the world — including Moderna, Lila Sciences, Inari Agriculture and beyond. Raj leads Flagship’s cross-company initiative to leverage AI and biotechnology to stop disease before it starts. He is also on faculty and associate physician at Harvard Medical School and Mass General Brigham. Previously, as White House Senior Director and Special Assistant to the President of the United States, Dr. Panjabi led the response to COVID-19 and other public health crises at the National Security Council. He played a lead role executing the 2022 National Biodefense Strategy to prevent pandemics and defend health security, coordinating over $12 billion in annual investment across 16 federal agencies. Panjabi also helped oversee implementation of the President’s 2022 Executive Order on Advancing Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing Innovation. Panjabi has held top executive roles. As the 3rd U.S. Coordinator of the President’s Malaria Initiative, he helped launch the world’s first malaria vaccine, create a strategy to prevent 1 billion cases and manage an ~$800 million enterprise protecting 700 million people across 30 countries. He is Co-Founder and President Emeritus of Last Mile Health (supported by TED’s Audacious Project) which leverages digital technology to train thousands of community health providers bringing care to millions of people. Panjabi has cared for outpatients on Medicaid/Medicare in federally qualified health centers pioneering value-based care and inpatients in the Mass General Brigham healthcare system. Panjabi was an Entrepreneur In Residence at Emerson Collective and has served as board member and advisor to leading technology companies, foundations and organizations, including the Skoll Foundation, Bipartisan Commission on Biodefense at Atlantic Council, Governors Public Health Alliance and Etiome. One of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People in the World and TIME’s 50 Most Influential People in Healthcare, he was twice named to FORTUNE’s World’s 50 Greatest Leaders list.
