Rodrigo Lopez

Rodrigo López is a project director, innovation consultant and university lecturer based in Punta Arenas, Chile. With more than 15 years of experience, he has led and evaluated public investment, applied R&D, science communication, cultural heritage and territorial development initiatives. His work has connected scientific knowledge, public funding, institutional priorities and regional needs, including projects at the Chilean Antarctic Institute and the National Cultural Heritage Service. As a TEDxPuntaArenas licensee, he has managed the TEDx brand requirements, contributed to speaker curation and preparation, supervised filming and post-production, and published talks on TED platforms. He also teaches organizational change project evaluation at the University of Chile and uses generative AI to support analysis, technical writing, information synthesis and project decision-making.

I am passionate about connecting science, innovation, culture and public institutions with the people and territories they are meant to serve. I enjoy helping complex projects move from an initial idea to a feasible plan, coordinated execution and useful results. I am also deeply committed to Brazilian jiu-jitsu, which I practise four times a week. Its combination of discipline, technical learning, adaptability and calm problem-solving under pressure has become an important part of how I approach both personal and professional challenges.

Knowledge creates public value when people can connect it with a place, a shared purpose and a practical course of action. Good ideas need more than visibility: they need careful listening, diverse perspectives, clear responsibilities, resources, trust and the ability to learn while moving forward. When science, institutions and communities work together, even remote territories can become places where globally relevant ideas are developed and tested.

My TED journey began in Punta Arenas, one of the world’s southernmost cities, where scientific research, Antarctic identity and local creativity meet. I have served as a TEDxPuntaArenas licensee and organizer, managing the relationship with TED, contributing to speaker curation, helping speakers develop and rehearse their talks, supervising filming and post-production, and uploading the finished videos to TED platforms. I see TEDx as a disciplined way to help locally rooted ideas reach wider conversations while preserving the speaker’s authentic voice.

Since 2018, I have served as a volunteer mountain rescuer with the Magallanes chapter of Chile’s Cuerpo de Socorro Andino, preparing to operate in remote, rugged and unpredictable environments. I also led the construction of Patagón Park, regarded as the world’s southernmost bike park, in the Magallanes National Reserve. These experiences have taught me to assess risk, read the terrain, coordinate people under uncertainty and turn ambitious ideas into practical work.
