My plate at Sno-Isle Libraries includes healthy portions of media relations, key spokesperson to the media and target audiences, other public information functions, point of contact for news media representatives, patrons and the general public while generating public awareness and understanding of Sno-Isle Libraries' mission, vision, strategic plan, and objectives. What’s the recipe? Start with cultivating relationships with writers, editors and producers in the print, electronic media and online news and library media organizations. Add a few dashes of translating the complex information and issues facing an institution that brings more than 700,000 residents of two counties the access to the materials and education they need with issues and crisis situations and translate it all into information that is clear, concise and understandable forms for public information distribution. Ingredients include writing and disseminating news advisories and releases; sharing potential story ideas with news and media outlets; producing feature articles, speeches and presentations; producing, coordinating or hosts packaged public information features or pieces for distribution through media outlets and channels. Also on the menu, I’m developing and implementing strategies for effective and proactive media communications. WOT? That means identifying potential news and communication opportunities to target communities and audiences along with planning, developing and managing the library’s public information program. And, the provence? It’s nice to be surrounded by pros whose unassuming self-confidence leaves plenty of room for ideas fertilized by enthusiasm to blossom. Communications is not just a means to an end, it is a fundamental component of the human condition. It is a dynamic process that calls for not just understanding, but embracing the dichotomy of using an inherently ambiguous process to convey precise concepts, emotions and information.
