Born Bowen, Queensland, Australia 1952. Qualified in medicine in 1975. Research into diabetes. Joined BMJ (British Medical Journal) in 1987. Took journal onto the web in 1995. Championed open access to original scientific research. Served on advisory panel to PubMed Central (NLM).
