Bio
Alvise has been formally educated in architecture, town planning, conservation and computation. He is an individual who believes that successful design cannot be separated from tools. He is a graduate of Turin Polytechnic, a Fulbright Scholar and a graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology under the supervision of Prof. William J. Mitchell.
Alvise was Assistant Professor of the School of Design, Hong Kong Polytechnic University with Professor John Frazer. In 2000, Alvise join the global design powerhouse Arup in the Research and Development team under the direction of Dr. Chris Luebkeman. He is an Associate in Foresight, Innovation + Incubation team, leads the global virtual design community within the firm (Virtual Design Network) and chairs the senior management group setup to transition to modelling (BEM taskforce). Alvise is responsible for the business development of Realtime Synthetic Environments. Alvise is registered architect in Milan.
I'm passionate about
designing and prototyping the buit environment before it is constructed, to achieve better performance including sustainability.
An idea worth spreading
3D urbanism. Ultimately designers aim is to achieve an integrated environment where - during the design process, including the early stages – the designer can generate a three-dimensional geometrical design, set up inter-related analysis and optimisation routines and receive meaningful feedback in realtime. Towards this ultimate goal Arup made a first feasible step. “3D Urbanism” is a research project aiming at bringing discreet quantitative analytical solutions (urban design, moving vehicles, moving people, acoustics, lighting and climate) into a unified Realtime interactive environment to demonstrate performance based design to designer, client and city planner. User journeys though the virtual environment are tracked and visualized to inform the design process

The TED story
Design is riddled of “prima donna” designing striking environments that sometimes don’t work for their users and “designs by committee” creating environments that are sometimes obsolete before they are thought, let alone built. Enabled by design process technology, (such as Sound Lab, flow computation and Immersive Environments), radically innovative designs, such as “zero-carbon” neighborhoods, might be adopted and constructed; environments addressing futures that are deemed plausible by their users.
