Bio

Dr. James Edwards is the first Executive Director of the Encyclopedia of Life. Dr. Edwards has had a distinguished career in science management. For the last 25 years he served in many positions at the National Science Foundation (NSF). During this time he became increasingly interested in informatics tools and resources for biodiversity scientists and was involved in starting several national and international programs in this area. In 2001 NSF detailed Dr. Edwards to Copenhagen to serve as the first Executive Secretary for the Global Biodiversity Information Facility, an international organization that links together the biodiversity collections databases of museums and botanical gardens. When his detailed ended in May 2007, he assumed his position at the EOL.
