I am Shahd R. Alian, an English Language and Literature student and an Arabic–English translator based in Gaza, Palestine. I am passionate about language, literature, and the power of translation to make knowledge accessible across cultures. As a TED Translator, I hope to help meaningful ideas reach Arabic-speaking audiences while continuing to develop my skills in translation, subtitling, and cross-cultural communication.

I am passionate about English literature, Arabic–English translation, and making educational content accessible to wider audiences. I enjoy exploring how language shapes emotions, perspectives, and human connection. I am especially interested in literary and academic translation, subtitling, close reading, and using language to build bridges between cultures.

Language should never be a barrier to knowledge. When an idea is translated with accuracy, clarity, and cultural awareness, it can cross borders, reach new communities, and inspire people who might otherwise never encounter it. Translation is not simply replacing words; it is giving ideas a new voice while preserving their meaning and impact.

My TED journey began with a desire to use my language skills for a meaningful purpose. As an English Language and Literature student from Gaza, I have seen how access to knowledge can expand people’s perspectives and create hope. Joining the TED Translators community gives me the opportunity to help valuable ideas reach Arabic-speaking audiences. For me, every subtitle is a small bridge connecting a speaker’s message with someone discovering it in another language.

People don’t always know that I am good at noticing the meaning behind words. I enjoy paying attention to tone, context, emotion, and small linguistic details that can change how a message is understood. I am also good at organizing information, researching unfamiliar topics, and turning complex ideas into clear, natural language.
