About James
Bio
James G. Robinson's son Nadav was born with a condition so rare the diagnosis required three sentences to explain. Their five years together — including three surgeries before the age of five, and a medical crisis that stranded their family halfway around the world — revealed unexpected lessons about the privilege of fatherhood and what it means to live, grow and heal.
His memoir More Than We Expected (Post Hill Press, 2023), which Booklist calls "a giving, thought-provoking, and heart-tugging family saga," chronicles that journey.
Since its publication, James has been invited to share his family's story with clinicians, rare disease advocates, and families navigating complex medical journeys. He has delivered Grand Rounds at children's hospitals nationwide and spoken at conferences spanning pediatric medicine, biotechnology, and rare disease advocacy. His talk at CHOP's Cardiology Conference in February 2025 was met with a standing ovation.
James spent twenty years at The New York Times, where he helped develop the company's digital subscription business and pioneered the use of audience analytics in the newsroom. His essay "Road to Recovery," published in the Times after his son's death, was selected as a notable essay in The Best American Travel Writing 2018. He teaches journalism at Columbia University and lives in Brooklyn with his wife and two surviving sons.
