Kyle Mullin is an educator working at the Canadian International School of Beijing (CISB) since 2020. Organizing TEDXCISBYouth for the first time this year been an exciting and rewarding challenge. Aside from coordinating 11 engaging and meaningful student and guest speaker talks, he has also enjoyed introducing new elements to our TEDx event, such as an overarching musical theatre concept, and a guest panel interview. The latter is a continuation of his lifelong passion for journalism, which is informed by his experienced reporting for The Guardian, WIRED, Billboard, theBeijinger and more.

Be bold, be ambitious, be brave!

I first joined TEDx as a coach and mentor for student speakers. When the opportunity came to lead an event at the school where I work as a teacher, the Canadian International School of Beijing (CISB), I jumped at the chance. It was an opportunity for my team and I to break the mold and plan a more ambitious event. One where conventional MCs upped the ante by memorizing a narrative style script and performing musical numbers to introduce speakers. One where a musician, during the intermission performance, merged past and present with traditional songs and modern electronica, in keeping with the event's theme Brave New Now. One where a student who was often shy stepped out of her comfort zone and interviewed the musician in front of the audience, similar to a TV host, gaining confidence and learning a valuable communication skill. In our effort to shake things up, not everything went right- some of the performers forgot their lines during the MC segments, we made some mistakes projecting images from the event laptop on the LED screen, but overall the event went very well and impressed our audiences with its bold and creative approach.

Canoeing and kayaking! My favorite teacher, as a high school student, launched an innovative PE programme at our school. Because of our location near a river, we were able to leave the gymnasium at our school and enjoy nature, learn how to paddle, and study canoeing safety.
