The TED story
Mark Witten is a Program Coordinator and National Test Center Coordinator with the University of Maryland Global Campus, serving military and military-connected students across Asia. A former firefighter/paramedic and flight medic, Mark spent years responding to crises where every second counted. His work required split-second decision-making, calm under extreme pressure, and an unwavering focus on the people depending on him.
When his life took an international turn, Mark transitioned from emergency medicine to higher education—bringing with him the same commitment to service and problem-solving. Now, instead of stabilizing patients, he helps stabilize academic journeys, guiding students through the challenges of deployment, relocation, and balancing school with demanding careers.
Mark’s passion lies in building resilience—both in individuals and communities. He believes resilience is not an innate trait, but a skill that can be cultivated and strengthened through learning, connection, and support. Through his work across continents, he has witnessed how the principles that save lives in crisis can also help people navigate uncertainty, adapt to change, and achieve their goals.
In addition to his work in education, Mark is an event organizer, community builder, and advocate for lifelong learning. He leads initiatives like TEDxUMGC Okinawa to amplify ideas that inspire personal growth, cultural understanding, and positive change. Whether on a global stage or in a one-on-one conversation, Mark’s mission is clear: to help others keep moving forward—no matter what challenges lie ahead.
