Bio
I’m Dr Mildred Lobo, a passionate and purpose-driven school principal dedicated to shaping inclusive, compassionate, and future-ready learning communities. My leadership journey in education has been guided by a deep belief: that schools thrive when people—students, teachers, and families—are seen, heard, and empowered to grow together.
At the heart of my approach is a commitment to holistic development. I lead with empathy, creativity, and clarity, ensuring that academic excellence goes hand-in-hand with emotional well-being and ethical leadership. I’ve had the privilege of working with diverse school teams, where my focus has been on fostering a culture of collaboration, curiosity, and continuous improvement.
Teacher growth is a cornerstone of my leadership philosophy. I design and facilitate reflective, interactive workshops that explore themes like empathy, accountability, and open-mindedness. I love using stories, visuals, and journaling to spark meaningful dialogue. Whether I’m leading a back-to-school orientation or coaching teachers one-on-one, I aim to create a safe, energizing space where educators feel valued and inspired.
Celebrating and supporting teachers throughout the year is something I take great pride in—whether through “You Matter” campaigns, peer recognition initiatives, or staff awards that recognize both professional excellence and quirky creativity. I believe that empowered teachers create transformative learning experiences, and that every adult in a school contributes to shaping its culture.
I also champion student voice, agency, and leadership. From initiating digital citizenship drives to mentoring students in public speaking, MUNs, and outreach programs, I encourage learners to lead with purpose and compassion. I see schools not only as spaces for learning but as launchpads for change—where young people explore their potential and find their place in the world.
My leadership style is rooted in reflective practice. I’ve led self-review initiatives, supported appraisal systems that balance performance and well-being, and developed academic reports that reflect a broader view of student growth. I value systems and structure, but never at the cost of human connection.
I also enjoy writing and communicating school stories—whether it’s crafting end-of-year tributes, shaping social media posts that capture everyday school magic, or delivering talks that connect head and heart. Language is a powerful leadership tool, and I use it to uplift, provoke thought, and build community.
Some of my most fulfilling moments as a leader have come from designing simple yet meaningful rituals: staff huddles, Grade 1 sing-alongs, student-led assemblies, or gratitude circles. These moments remind me that joy, kindness, and community are as essential to school life as curriculum and assessment.
A lifelong learner, I continue to grow alongside my community. Whether it’s brushing up on French, exploring the latest in educational research, or simply listening deeply to a student’s story—I remain curious, grounded, and hopeful about the future of education.
As a principal, my vision is to lead with heart and clarity, nurture lifelong learners, and create school cultures where everyone feels they belong, believe they can grow, and are inspired to make a difference
I'm passionate about
I am passionate about building schools that don’t just educate—but inspire, empower, and transform.
At the heart of everything I do lies a deep belief: that schools are more than institutions—they are living, breathing communities where young minds and hearts are shaped. I am driven by the idea that true education is not just about grades or content mastery; it’s about nurturing responsible, compassionate, and curious individuals who are ready to make a difference in the world.
My passion lies in creating safe, vibrant spaces where students are not passive recipients of knowledge but active participants in their own learning journeys. I believe in giving them voice and agency, and I’m constantly exploring ways to ensure that student leadership is woven into the fabric of school life. Whether it’s through digital responsibility campaigns, community outreach projects, or student-led assemblies, I want learners to understand that their ideas matter—that their presence can shift culture.
Equally, I am deeply committed to the growth and well-being of teachers. I believe teachers are the heartbeat of a school, and when we invest in their growth—professionally and personally—we unlock possibilities far beyond the classroom. I design reflective workshops and coaching sessions that help teachers reconnect with their “why,” challenge their assumptions, and celebrate their strengths. For me, professional development is not a checklist—it’s a culture of continuous learning, shared vulnerability, and mutual respect.
Another core passion of mine is rehumanizing leadership. In my experience, leading with compassion is not a soft skill—it’s a transformative force. I strive to model a kind of leadership that balances accountability with empathy, structure with flexibility, and clarity with creativity. Whether I’m writing a newsletter, mentoring a colleague, or planning a schoolwide initiative, I lead with intention and heart.
I am also passionate about the small, unseen moments that give life to a school—the unexpected breakthroughs in the classroom, the laughter in the staffroom, the quiet confidence of a student who finally believes in themselves. These moments fuel me. They remind me that education is not a transaction—it’s a relationship, a commitment, and a lifelong journey.
I believe that schools should be spaces where people feel they belong, where learning is joyful, and where every individual—student, teacher, or parent—feels seen, heard, and valued.
An idea worth spreading
Transforming Schools Through Empathetic Leadership
In today’s fast-paced educational landscape, where metrics and outcomes often dominate conversations, the power of empathetic leadership is frequently overlooked. Yet, I believe that empathy is not just a “nice-to-have” quality—it is a transformative leadership strategy that has the potential to reshape schools into thriving, inclusive communities.
Empathetic leadership begins with deep listening—truly understanding the experiences, struggles, and aspirations of everyone in the school community: students, teachers, staff, and families. When leaders pause to listen with openness and without judgment, they build trust. Trust, in turn, becomes the foundation for innovation, collaboration, and resilience.
As a school principal, I have witnessed how leading with empathy can ignite change. It is about recognizing that behind every academic challenge or behavioural issue is a human story. When we respond with compassion rather than control, we invite cooperation instead of resistance. Teachers feel supported rather than scrutinized; students feel seen rather than silenced.
Empathy also reshapes how we approach accountability. Instead of demanding compliance, empathetic leaders engage in honest conversations that focus on growth and well-being. This balance between high expectations and human understanding creates an environment where people are motivated to do their best because they know they are valued.
Moreover, empathetic leadership fosters a culture where vulnerability is not a weakness but a source of strength. When I encourage teachers and students to share their challenges openly, we create a safe space for risk-taking and creativity. This culture of psychological safety leads to richer learning experiences and deeper connections.
One of the ways I embed empathy into leadership is through professional development that emphasizes reflection and emotional intelligence. Workshops that explore themes like compassion, accountability, and open-mindedness help educators reconnect with their purpose and build stronger relationships with students. Empowered teachers, in turn, cultivate classrooms that are nurturing and dynamic.
Student leadership is another vital dimension of empathetic schools. By listening to student voices and involving them in decision-making, we not only develop their agency but also create policies and practices that truly reflect their needs. When students feel heard, they are more engaged, responsible, and invested in their own learning.
Empathetic leadership also extends beyond the school walls. Engaging families with understanding and respect builds partnerships that support student growth holistically. It acknowledges that education is a shared journey requiring empathy across all relationships.
Ultimately, transforming schools through empathetic leadership is about humanizing education. It’s about shifting from a transactional model focused on outputs to a relational model centered on people. This transformation leads to improved academic outcomes, enhanced well-being, and a school culture where everyone—students, teachers, and families—feels connected, motivated, and inspired.
In a world that often prioritizes speed and efficiency, empathetic leadership invites us to slow down, listen deeply, and lead with heart. It is this leadership that truly transforms schools from places where people merely “show up” to communities where they belong, believe, and become.
Things you might not know
Many people don’t know some of the quieter sides of me that bring me joy and balance outside of my professional life. For instance, I’m quite skilled at crochet—a craft that requires patience, creativity, and focus. It’s a soothing practice that allows me to slow down, reflect, and create something beautiful stitch by stitch. It’s also a reminder that small, consistent efforts build meaningful results, a lesson I often carry into my leadership.
I’m also a passionate player of Scrabble, a game I enjoy not just for the fun but for the way it sharpens my vocabulary and strategic thinking. Scrabble challenges me to think deeply, plan ahead, and embrace curiosity about words and language. Along similar lines, I love solving Sudoku puzzles and crossword puzzles. These brain teasers engage my problem-solving skills and bring a sense of accomplishment that’s both calming and invigorating.
Cooking is another outlet I cherish, though I admit I tend to do it mostly when inspiration strikes. When I do cook, I enjoy experimenting with flavors and sharing meals that bring people together. Cooking reminds me of the importance of nourishment—not just for the body but for the soul.
Above all, my deepest source of strength and guidance is my faith. I am deeply religious, and my relationship with God anchors every aspect of my life. The Holy Eucharist and the Bible are constant sources of comfort, wisdom, and renewal for me. They remind me daily of the values I strive to live by—compassion, humility, service, and hope. My faith sustains me through challenges and inspires me to lead with kindness and purpose.
These personal passions and beliefs shape who I am—not only as an educator and leader but as a person committed to growth, connection, and meaning in all areas of life
