He is the Founder and Lead Organizer of TEDxLyari, an internationally recognized TEDx initiative created to bring ideas worth spreading to Lyari and highlight the talent, stories, and potential of its people. Under his leadership, TEDxLyari brought together speakers, young leaders, professionals, entrepreneurs, educators, and community members around the theme “Future in Focus,” creating a platform for meaningful conversations and ideas that challenge conventional thinking.
Beyond TEDx, Basit has remained actively involved in youth development and community initiatives. As a Core Team Member of Hamara Lyari Organization, he has contributed to initiatives focused on education, youth mentorship, community engagement, and social development. His work has included supporting young people, organizing community activities, and encouraging greater participation in educational and developmental opportunities.
He also serves as Vice President of the Entrepreneurship Club at the Arts Council of Pakistan, Karachi, where he has contributed to initiatives promoting entrepreneurship, freelancing, and skill development among young people. Basit is also a former President of the SMIU Debating Society at Sindh Madressatul Islam University, where he was elected through a competitive electoral process. During his tenure, he focused on strengthening student participation, leadership, public speaking, and intellectual engagement. His experience in debating includes participation in more than 50 competitions, Model United Nations conferences, and university-level leadership sessions, helping him develop strong skills in communication, advocacy, team leadership, and public engagement.
His academic background is in Computer Science, but his interests and work extend far beyond technology. He has developed a multidisciplinary profile combining education, youth leadership, entrepreneurship, community development, public speaking, and social impact. He believes that education should not only prepare individuals for careers but also empower them to understand their responsibilities toward their communities.
Through his different roles, Basit has organized and supported large-scale initiatives involving young people, educational institutions, civil society organizations, and community stakeholders. He is particularly interested in creating platforms where young people can express their ideas, develop leadership skills, access opportunities, and contribute to the development of their communities.
His journey is rooted in Lyari, Karachi, where he has consistently worked to promote a more positive image of the area by highlighting its people, talent, creativity, and potential. Through TEDxLyari and other community initiatives, he seeks to challenge stereotypes and demonstrate that communities often described through their challenges also possess remarkable stories, ideas, and individuals capable of creating change.
Basit’s broader vision is to contribute to a society where young people are not merely recipients of opportunities but active participants in shaping their communities and future. His work reflects a belief that lasting change begins with individuals who are willing to take responsibility, build platforms for others, and turn ideas into action.
He continues to explore opportunities in youth development, education, community leadership, entrepreneurship, and social impact, with the aim of connecting people, ideas, and opportunities to create meaningful and lasting change.
I'm passionate about
I am passionate about youth empowerment, education, community development, leadership, entrepreneurship, and creating platforms that help young people turn their ideas into action. I care deeply about creating opportunities for underserved communities, encouraging young people to participate in social change, and using storytelling, dialogue, and collaboration to challenge stereotypes and inspire positive action.
An idea worth spreading
Every community has untold potential, but sometimes all it needs is someone willing to believe in it. We should stop defining people and communities by their challenges and start recognizing them by their ideas, talent, and potential. When we create platforms for people to be heard, we don't just share ideas; we create opportunities for those ideas to inspire others and become change.

The TED story
My TED story began with a simple belief: every community has stories worth sharing, and every young person deserves a platform to be heard.
Growing up and working in Lyari, Karachi, I saw a place often defined by its challenges rather than its people, talent, creativity, and potential. I wanted to challenge that narrative. Instead of simply talking about change, I wanted to create a platform where people could share ideas, experiences, and stories that could inspire others.
That vision led me to become the Founder and Lead Organizer of TEDxLyari. Bringing TEDx to Lyari was more than organizing an event. It was an attempt to create a space where ideas could cross boundaries, where young people could see themselves represented on a stage, and where the world could see another side of Lyari.
Along the way, my journey through university, debating, youth leadership, entrepreneurship, and community initiatives taught me that leadership is not about having a title. It is about taking responsibility, bringing people together, and creating opportunities for others.
TEDxLyari brought together people from different backgrounds and fields, each with their own experiences and ideas worth spreading. Seeing speakers take the stage and watching young people engage with those ideas reinforced something I have always believed: one idea, when shared at the right time and with the right audience, can change how someone sees themselves, their community, or their future.
My TED story is therefore not only about TEDxLyari. It is about a journey from being a young student with ideas to becoming someone who creates platforms for others to share theirs.
I continue to believe that change begins when someone is willing to take the first step. For me, that step was creating TEDxLyari. The journey continues through youth empowerment, education, community engagement, and the belief that every person and every community has a story worth telling.
Things you might not know
People don’t know I am good at bringing people together around an idea and turning that idea into something real. I enjoy connecting people from different backgrounds, building teams, solving unexpected problems, and making things happen with limited resources. I am also surprisingly good at public speaking, storytelling, and staying calm when plans change at the last minute.
