The TED story

I have been an ardent follower of Ted stories more so those related to education matters. This includes ideas in science, talks, mentorship, experiments among others. I haven't written my story yet, buts it's been one of inspiration, resilience and not giving up. Coming from a very poor background that was not strongly supporting a girl child going to school and having lost a parent in my early years of high school, I had every reason to give up, but I didn't. My high school teacher was my greatest encouragements. She looked for me at my lowest moment and held my hand. I started teaching even before I joined university formally. In Kenya, this we were the days of young high school graduates volunteering to support other high school students either freely or just to gain the experience in teaching. This is where my passion for teaching was made alive. I loved how she interacted with learners, and she encouraged me to look forward to teaching. I received a government scholarship and managed to pursue a degree in Education Science, Mathematics and Chemistry. I have taught for more than 18 years, and it seems like I started teaching yesterday. Cambridge wrote to me some years back as one of the teachers who had been nominated for the teacher of the year award by my students. I have a very lovely interaction with my learners. They feel free to tell me anything about their lives even if it has nothing to do with Chemistry or Mathematics. Their well-being is my priority. It's my joy to see them become better each day. My students motivated me to go back to school to do counseling so that I be a complete package of a teacher. I enjoy what I do each day. I will choose teaching at any moment of my life. I package and sell hope to my students. I want them to enjoy their life at school at all times. My name is Ms. Abby as my students call me. I teach Mathematics and Chemistry. I always look forward to meeting that new child that is brought to my school and my class. That student that I guide as a class teacher, those A- level students who think Chemistry is hard, we break it down into simple ways that they can understand. Teaching is my life. I love what I do each day of my life. Thank you!
