Engineer

Usman Shehu Ahmad is a Chemical Engineer, Full Stack Developer, and the Technical Lead for TEDxSabonGari. Currently pursuing his degree at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, he sits at the intersection of process engineering and digital innovation. He believes that technology is the most effective tool for community development. This belief drove him to lead the complete digital transformation of TEDxSabonGari, where he architected a custom CMS and event management system from the ground up. Beyond code, Usman is a researcher focused on Process Simulation and Data Analytics, working to optimize industrial systems for sustainability. He is a strong advocate for "doing the hard work"—whether that's debugging a Next.js application minutes before a live event or spending sleepless nights on engineering simulations. He is driven by a simple philosophy: if you have the skills to build a solution, you have a responsibility to build it.

I am passionate about the convergence of Engineering and Digital Infrastructure. I love building systems that work—whether that is a chemical process plant or a high-traffic event website. I am also deeply committed to bridging the digital divide in Northern Nigeria, proving that world-class tech solutions can be built locally in Zaria.

"Volunteering is not free—it is a ladder." We often think of volunteering as simple charity, but for technical professionals, it is the ultimate training ground. It forces you to build high-stakes infrastructure with zero budget, solve critical failures in real-time (like running a control room on unstable solar power), and manage complex human systems. My idea is that young professionals shouldn't just volunteer to "give back"—they should volunteer to "level up." The pressure of a live event teaches resilience that a classroom never can.

Software Engineer

My journey started as a standard volunteer for TEDxSabonGari. But when I saw the state of the event's web presence, I couldn't stay on the sidelines. I didn't just want to patch the existing site; I wanted to completely reimagine it. I took on the challenge of building a custom Content Management System (CMS) from scratch, which led to my role evolving into the core team's Technical Lead. The experience culminated on event day: battling solar power failures that took out our main projectors and managing real-time slide updates for speakers like. That day taught me that the "TED" experience isn't just on the stage—it's in the engine room where volunteers keep the lights on and the ideas flowing. I came for the inspiration, but I stayed for the challenge.

Thriving in chaos. Most people panic when the power cuts or the slide deck crashes 2 minutes before a talk. I find that I do my best work under extreme pressure. I actually enjoy the adrenaline of the "control room" environment where rapid troubleshooting is the only option.
