Bio
Everything is either mined or grown. Imagine a world where microbial solutions underpin a new economy, surpassing the value of the fossil fuel era?
I am dedicated to applied microbes and consortias for boldly advancing technologies as an expanded economy; and preserving the trove of microbial intelligence for now and generations to come.
It has been estimated that there are 1 trillion species of microorganisms, and we have only discovered and cataloged 1/1000th of 1%. The microverse has been evolving clever survival strategies for over 3.8 billion years. We can partner with infinite biological blueprints to solve our current material and supply chain crisis and shape our future through valorized diversity.
Originally an architect, and after reading Janine Benyus’s book on Biomimicry in 2005- I asked a question “What if we could grow cement?” I focused my efforts on solving cement with microorganisms, starting in a second bedroom lab and began prototyping. After success (and quitting my professorship in academia to fully focus), I started a company Biomason in 2012, and worked for 11 years as CEO with 56 other disciplines commercializing the technology in both the US and Europe.
In February 2024, I co-founded a globally distributed non-profit institute, BIOME Consortia. Our mission is to drive the current thousands to billions of microbial solutions in application by 2050. The bioeconomy is a way to expand our current economy- which is rooted in finite resources, such as oil. Moreover- this practice of extraction has led to an imbalance of systems across our planet.
The bioeconomy can rapidly accelerate with the knowledge of more microbial discovery, characterization, application and translation- driving the infrastructure for infinite supply chains and advanced technology.
My passion involves enabling a great period of discovery and application of our microverse to all disciplines and generations. The knowledge in our microverse is one of the greatest treasures on our planet, and responsible access and preservation of this information is paramount.
