About Isabel

I am a…

Business leader, Entrepreneur, Inventor

Bio

CEO and Co-Founder of NanoFreeze, a startup from Colombia, building a new way to refrigerate naturally, using the least amount of energy possible to create a passive refrigeration that can last twice times longer than regular ice. Before starting with NanoFreeze, Isabel was a student of bio-design with a specialization in Business Entrepreneurship at Universidad de Los Andes in Colombia. Thanks to her Biodesign background, she was able to learn about nanotech and functionalization processes what made possible the creation of a new bio-nanocompund. As Business Administrator she had a good performance on building business strategy, new revenue models focusing on the creation of recurring revenue, but also by creating commercial partnerships to boost company' sales.

I'm passionate about

Creating solutions to fight against climate change, but also working with others to find the right solution for the problem. I also find passion on helping vulnerable populations to access to first-necessity resources such as vaccines, medicines or even perishable foods. More specifically i feel really passionate about refrigeration, i found this industry truly unexplored with a huge potential to innovate on it, and i cant feel more excited to be contributing to climate change by transforming this industry into a sustainable one.

An idea worth spreading

In order to help rural populations in Colombia to organize their monthly economical expenses, I created a financial tool that was working as money box but with daily goals. The money box was linked with a bank entity that at the end of the month was going catch all people savings with no charges. The rural populations in Colombia use to live day by day expending all the money that they earned on that day, instead of saving it for future events, so as a result they were living in scarcity and don’t understanding how to change their reality. The financial tool was created to improve rural populations life quality by changing their financial habits. The tool was formed by a software tool for the baking entity use and also by a moneybox for the rural people use. Each person using the financial tool was pushed to choose a final goal that at the end of the year it had to be accomplished, as for example, “save money for my son’s college registration”. After picking the final goal, the financial tool was asking how much money was required to accomplish the goal and automatically the tool arranged 365 daily goals with small daily savings. At the end of the month each person had to take their savings to a close recruitment point, so the bank entity was going to be allowed to recruit the money. At the end of the year the bank entity was the one in charge pay to the third party in order to accomplish the final goal with each person savings. This solution today its implemented in bank entity in Mexico and Colombia in order to provide a financial help to these rural populations.

The TED story

My startup NanoFreeze created a new way to refrigerate naturally through the use of a novel bio-nanotechnology which allows to freeze at higher temperatures, reducing the carbon footprint of the refrigeration industry. NanoFreeze's bio-nanotechnology is made by using freezing enzymes and suspending them with two different biotech processes. With this invention it is possible to create a natural coolant double the specific heat of water, allowing an ice/solid to cool between 2ºC to 8º during 84 hours, using an insulated cooler. NanoFreeze sells this technology to companies that need to transport under cold temperatures perishable products such as flowers, food, beverages or medicines. The product portafolio that today is addressed for the cold transportation is formed by Ice Packs, Cold Coats, and Foldable Coolers. Today, the startup is also developing a new product which are NanoFreeze Panels to enter in the refrigeration market and reduce energy consumption.
