Bio

I have done many things - some successfully and others have become great "learning" experiences! The common theme in my life is people - getting to know what drives and motivates them, what empowers them and how to harness this energy. I enjoy leading people to find calm from their chaos. I originally trained as a physiotherapist and eventually gained a Masters in Occupational Health and Safety. Working as a physiotherapist and Certified Professional Ergonomist has been a privilege that allowed me in to various workplaces and so many lives. I have learned to respect the work and processes – and I still struggle with the balance between profitability and social responsibility. My work experiences over the last 25 years include clinical physiotherapy (private and public sectors), university guest lecturer, tutor, researcher (OHS) and consultant and trainer in health, hospitality, administrative, manufacturing, aviation and mining industries. I am a co-developer of the Worksafe Australia Anthropometric Database for Mixed Populations (1995) I currently assist managers and staff to achieve greater understanding of efficiencies in the workplace by determining the relationship between people, processes and systems in diverse situations, and by creating effective solutions that streamline businesses and simplify the complexities in daily life. I have assessed systems of many shapes, sizes, styles and formats in both the public and private sectors and this has led me to develop The Systems Model™ to explain the relationship and interaction between people and the systems they use. I hope this will help employers and employees, legislators and the general population understand why some rules and laws are observed and others not. My current focus is guiding people through the difficult processes and emotions of coping with divorce. My parents had an acrimonious divorce 50 years ago and never got over it with tremendous impacts on so many lives around them - and my divorce works so well that I am comfortable living around the corner from my former husband and his wife and their child, which seems to confuse and amaze others around me. I am told that I live and breathe calm from choas.

I'm passionate about

Meeting new people and having some great conversations. Helping others ackowledge their strengths. I love having my thoughts and my attitudes challenged. The rest - my son, my dogs, my friends..

An idea worth spreading

Respect, appreciation and gratitude is the basis for strong relationships - personal, professional and communal. With respect we can allow individuality to shine bringing diversity, and having an open heart and an open mind means that anything is possible. Appreciation helps others to know their value and gratitude makes the world go round - and is too often not expressed or shared. Accepting that others have as much right to their point of view as any one individual brings tolerance and respect, and that quite possibly one idea is no better than another, it is how those ideas are expressed and implemented that carries weight. Complex ideas can be expressed simply - and language should enhance conversations rather than limit or distract from sharing ideas and meaning. Congruence and integrity rule!

The TED story

This is my third TED Conference. I just want to keep coming back. I love the smaller TED active group - Aspen, Palm Springs and am somewhat curious about the "big" event. I feel so lucky and excited that I have been accepted to attend any TED event - and look forward to the conversations and experiences of meeting new friends and catching up with some from previous TEDs. I still have a wish that TED for Teens will exist one day. I am a member of Thought Leaders in Australia - we held a best of TED 2008 in May 2008 in most capital cities in Australia, and held a TEDx event in Sydney in May 2009.
