Bio

In March 2008 I conceived and established Humanity Productions, a nascent media community aiming to support positive global change through creative media and capacity development. This is a virtual network of film-makers, photographers, artists and educators who are committed to conveying what it is to be positively human in many of the most extreme situations facing ordinary people in the world today, both at home and abroad. Together with the people who live such experience, we create documentary, photography and music. We have no employees. We have to date worked on diverse projects in Gaza, Chad, DRC, the UK, Belgium and South Africa. An idea worth spreading

From the grass-roots work of humanitarians and peacemakers, working at the most gritty extremes of human experience, we know that it is not the big theories about ‘the irreducible value of human life’ that make people from very different walks of life start caring about each other’s wellbeing. Rather, it’s the ordinary connections of family and friends, familiar activities and feelings, which bridge the gaps in empathy and imagination. Film can be used to challenge misrepresentations and to discover truth. Through allowing us to be moved and opened up by images and sounds, drawing us into stories of people far away who inhabit worlds of sweet stalls and dinner-time, groceries and soccer games, film can stretch our sense of our own community beyond our natural affiliations of culture, religion and nation. We can relate to these day to day things. We can relate to popping down to the corner shop to buy a bag of sugar.
