About Carol

Bio

As an attorney operating my own law office in Manhattan, I genuinely enjoy counseling individual and corporate clients in commercial transactions, litigation, alternative dispute resolution and real estate deals as well as complex problem-solving and logistical coordination. I also devote a substantial portion of my time to representation of operators of ski areas and other recreation venues and defense of products liability claims for manufacturers of sports equipment. I was instrumental in drafting and lobbying for the statute and regulations that govern ski area operations in New York State and have won dozens of cases construing the law favorably to my clients. I greatly enjoy foreign travel and opportunities to meet new people and learn new things. I am a 1979 graduate of the Harvard Law School where I was a co-founder and an Editor-in-Chief of the Harvard Women’s Law Journal. For many years I served on the Boards of Directors of the Association of Ski Defense Attorneys, the New York Women’s Bar Association, the New York Women’s Bar Association Foundation and the Center Against Domestic Violence (which operates shelters for battered women in New York City) and I am the pro bono attorney for civil matters for that organization. I conduct annual risk management seminars for the National Ski Areas Association and Ski Areas of New York (the national and state ski industry trade associations). After many years of participation in various Democratic Federal political campaigns, I was honored to be a primary candidate for a special election to fill the seat in the U.S. House of Representatives vacated by Kirsten Gillibrand when she was appointed to fill Hillary Clinton’s Senate seat. I finished as a top finalist for the Democratic nomination, edging out three dozen other well qualified candidates. Since that time, I have remained very involved with the campaign of the eventually elected Congressman, Scott Murphy, as well as the campaigns of Senator Gillibrand and other incumbents and candidates, particularly (but not exclusively) women.

Areas of expertise

The TED story

I attended TED numerous times with my husband, Bruce Gitlin (who owns and operates a high-end custom ornamental architectural metal and sculpture fabrication company), and my daughter, Sarah Gitlin, (a student/political activist who has worked on several congressional campaigns and was the campaign manager for mine). Inasmuch as I have developed a wide array of political contacts and my clients and co-counsel operate all over the United States and Canada in an extraordinarily large variety of endeavors, I bring to TED substantial networking capacity and ability to recognize and take advantage of connections between seemingly unrelated individuals, businesses and government.
