Bio

I am the managing partner of Applied Behavioral Technologies, Inc. d/b/a Joseph Riggio International, a strategic consulting firm. We have clients on five continents providing advice to entrepreneurs, executives and professionals on behavioral issues and decision-making in complex situations. Much of the work we do is focused on social influence, change management, organizational design and strategic decision-making. In 1995, after a seven-year apprenticeship with a World-Class Hypnotist and Master NLP Trainer I designed an elite performance development protocol. The protocol is based on uncovering the unique personal mythology of an individual, group, organization or society called the Mythogenic Self Process (internationally known as MythoSelf® programs). Today I run training programs, seminars, workshops and retreats internationally presenting the MythoSelf Process model to groups and providing private consulting to individuals and organizations. In 2005 I completed a Ph.D. in Business Administration. My dissertation was titled, "Towards a Theory of Transpersonal Decision-Making in Human Systems: A Neurolinguistically Modeled Phenomenography" and focused on Intentionality in relation to high-level, strategic decision-making. Previously I practiced Interior Architecture and Design. After deciding to leave the practice of architecture in 1988 I studied neurolinguistics and communication strategies before opening Applied Behavioral Technologies, a private consulting firm working largely in the area of strategy and leadership development. Programs I designed have been translated into six languages and delivered internationally in twenty six countries. I've also held a position on the faculty in the Design + Management department at Parsons The New School for Design in New York City. In that role I assisted in developing the sustainable design curriculum. When I'm not working I'm typically at home with my family cooking, entertaining or telling stories. I'm also an avid student, practitioner and instructor of hand-to-hand combat. I play guitar, bass and hand drums, e.g.: dijembe, congas ... I'm also a voracious reader, with a strong desire to replicate the Library of Alexandria in our home according to my wife.

I'm passionate about

The way our personal and shared mythologies influence the decisions we make, our performance and the societies we create.

An idea worth spreading

There are conversations occurring at tables around the world where the future is being designed ... we need all of our voices included in those conversations - especially the voices of those who have been silent.

The TED story

I've been a TEDster since 2007 and I was blown away the year the TED Active program was held at the Aspen Institute ... I still talk about it with everyone who will listen and stay in touch with folks who I connected with in Aspen those years ago. During the sessions in Aspen I decided to transform the mission of my business. Since then I've been unfolding the idea of the mythology of leadership in a connected society. As a result my firm, Joseph Riggio International, began sponsoring international gatherings with entrepreneurs to discuss topics impacting them as leaders in an evolving global society, especially the idea that business must transform and assume responsibility for its role in shaping the society we share. This year we are sponsoring a new international invitational congress we're calling "Legacy," about becoming a legacy leader in the transformation of the global society.
