About Bruce
Bio
I am currently the Director of Instruction at Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii. My wife and I lived in Hawaii briefly from 1969 to 1971, and then moved to Massachusetts, where I taught in the Canton Public Schools until 1998, when we returned to Hawaii. We have three grown sons.
My primary interests include teaching, writing, reading, photography, and art. I inherited from my mother a fondness for crossword puzzles, and from my father an inclination toward scrapbooks. I've kept journals and commonplace books for years. I’m drawn to strategic games like poker, chess, and Go. This past year I've become interested in drawing and painting and collage, and have been trying to find my way in those disciplines. In most instances I’m inclined to argue for process over product, for attentiveness over assertiveness, and for questions over answers. My experience as a student, as an educator, and as a parent have confirmed for me the wisdom of B. F. Skinner’s assertion that education is what’s left over after you’ve forgotten what you’ve learned. And I agree with Eric Sevareid when he says "One asks not only for the courage of his convictions, but for the courage of his doubts, in a world of dangerously passionate certainties."
I'm passionate about
teaching and learning, reading and writing, certain kinds of non-representational art, the game of chess.
