Bio
I am passionate about creating moments in peoples lives where they can interact with something beautiful, meaningful, and/or possibly profound.
During the day I am the “Visual Strategist” for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. There I develop creative ways of communicating, and work to transform complex concepts into meaningful stories that can be universally understood. My work is seen in public spaces, art museums, and is in outer space.
After doing the dishes, reading bedtime stories to my kids, and spending time with my wife, I work on other creative problem solving projects around the world. I am currently working on various installations for SIAS University in China.
In 2002 I graduated valedictorian from the graphic design program at Art Center College of Design. In 2012 I was select as "One of the most interesting people in Los Angeles" by the LA Weekly. I currently live in South Pasadena with my wife and three kids.
I'm passionate about
the unusual, the strange, the fascinating, the uplifting... art, science, technology, parenting, my wife, my children, my God, good food, good friends, trees, fresh air, breathing
An idea worth spreading
you cannot choose how you will die, but you can choose how you will live. (ok, a few choose how they die, but most of us do not)
Areas of expertise
Art, Children, Design, drilling holes in grains of sand, Ideas, Pasandea, Science Communication, Seattle, space
The TED story
My first exposure to TED was as a volunteer the first year Chris took over. The next year I was asked to display one of my installations, The Big Playground, which uses a hole drilled into a grain of sand to give a sense of scale of the universe.
I have met many amazing people. A few of them have become wonderful friends. We give each other advise and share both our trials and joy's.
