Bio
I study the vast expanses of boreal forests and Arctic tundra across Earth’s northern high latitudes. My work focuses on understanding how these systems impact—and are impacted by—global climate change.
I am particularly interested in changes to permafrost ecosystems, especially through disturbances such as wildfire and abrupt permafrost thaw, and the impacts on global climate and Arctic residents. I combine field measurements, satellite remote sensing, and a range of modeling techniques to gain insight into rapidly changing carbon and energy cycles, vegetation dynamics, and disturbance regimes. I then use this science to inform natural resource management and policies for improved climate mitigation, adaptation, and ecosystem protection.
I'm passionate about
Science-based decision making; people connecting with nature
An idea worth spreading
Humanity has all the potential in the world - it just needs to be harnessed
Areas of expertise
Biosphere, Climate feedbacks, Permafrost, Wildfire
The TED story
My first TED Conference was in Vancouver, 2022, where we launched our Audacious Project called Permafrost Pathways. I'm extremely excited to join for TED Countdown, and meet others passionate about climate science, solutions, and sustainability.
