Bio

I'm a communication and media specialist who has kept one foot on the professional side of the industry for three decades and the other foot on the academic side for almost two of those decades. A Marine Corps veteran, I was the first female Marine to be promoted to editor of the Quantico Sentry, the Corps’ oldest newspaper, and was the first female Marine to be awarded the Sgt. Maj. Dan Daly Award for historical writing. My BA and MA in Communication are both from George Mason University. Go Patriots! In 2017, I delivered my TEDx talk, "The Golden Rule Not So Much: Platinum Rule Rocks." Nowadays I stay busy as the Communications Director for Ad Fontes Media, as the Board President of Media Literacy Now, as a speaker coach for TEDxSavannah, and as the Founder & CEO of Communication TwentyFourSeven. For fun, I host the Communication TwentyFourSeven podcast, where we communicate about how we communicate.

I'm passionate about

media & news literacy, critical thinking, lifelong learning, meaningful conversations, and helping others become empowered communicators.

An idea worth spreading

It's time we communicate about how we communicate. Want to work on those communication skills? Stop seeking "like-minded" people. Look honestly at the information you consume. Have conversations with people who don't share your same political ideology.

Areas of expertise

communication skills, empowering women, listening skills, media analysis, media/news literacy, podcasting, public speaking, women veterans

The TED story

I've always enjoyed TED Talks and used them frequently as examples in the classroom when I was an educator. In 2017, I had the privilege of being a speaker at TEDxEvansStreet. For the past couple of years, I have volunteered as a speech coach for TEDxSavannah. I'm thinking it's time I get back up on the stage though!
