The TED story

I grew up in Northern California with my dad and three brothers. In 4th grade we moved to North Platte Nebraska for a few years. When I entered middle school there we had the choice to sign up for Home Economics or Wood Shop. Since I cooked, cleaned and sewed at home, and because my dad and grandpa were engineered and always had us working on some project at home, I signed up for shop. I was called to the principal’s office where it was explained to me that I made a mistake. As a girl I was supposed to sign up for Home Economics – Wood Shop was for the boys. I really hadn’t been trying to cause a problem; I was a very shy girl. But I held my ground, with the support of my dad and even got another girl to sign up with me. We were the first two girls to take (and rock) Wood Shop in North Platte, NE.
