I am a documentary filmmaker drawn to stories that sit in uncomfortable places—where the law, morality, and lived experience do not neatly align. Over the years, I’ve spent long periods listening to people whose lives are defined by systems larger than themselves: individuals navigating the criminal justice system, families living with the consequences of legal decisions, and communities shaped by outcomes they had little power to influence. What struck me was not just the injustice some faced, but how often complexity was flattened into labels—offender, victim, case, verdict. While working on long-form documentary projects, I began to notice a recurring pattern: systems designed to deliver certainty often leave little room for human ambiguity. Yet it is precisely in that ambiguity that truth lives. People are rarely only one thing, and decisions made in abstraction carry real emotional and social consequences. Storytelling became my way of slowing things down—of creating space for listening rather than judgment. Not to excuse harm, but to understand it. Not to replace the law, but to question what happens when legality and morality drift apart. My work explores how stories can reveal what statistics and headlines obscure: the human cost of rigid systems, and the possibility of empathy without agreement. I believe that when we truly listen to complex stories, we don’t just change our opinions—we change how we judge.
