Bio
Shelley Stolaroff Segal is a playwright, essayist, performer, and composer living in Greensboro, North Carolina. She was born in Houston, Texas and attended UNC Chapel Hill where she majored in British Literature. She then moved to the UK and did post-graduate work at the University of London. Segal received her theater training at The Drama Studio London and the CSC Conservatory in New York.
International and Regional stage credits include performances at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London; the Classic Stage Company in NYC; North Coast Repertory Company in San Diego; Main Street Theater in Houston; Caravan of Dreams in Dallas; the Hampton Playhouse in Hampton NH; and the Bailiwick Theatre in Chicago.
Non-fiction credits include The Washington Post, Blunt Moms, and Autism/Asperger’s Digest. Anthology credits include Voices from the Spectrum, Chicken Soup for the Soul, From Sac Literary Journal, and Multiples Illuminated. Playwriting credits include My Son, a play about autism and race, Bliss, a monologue play about marriage, Bucking Political Stars, a fringe piece starring Thomas Jefferson, Jesse Helms, and Carol Channing, Sidney in Focus, a trilogy of solo one-act plays, and Not Strictly Vaudeville, a musical. Related production credits include variety shows in honor of Intl Women’s Day, and Outing Your Autistic Child, (an original comedy production).
TED talks: My Son, her play about race and disability premiered in NYC in 2010. An 18-minute version followed at TEDx East, also in New York. Local performances of the 60-minute version included a short tour, the International Civil Rights Museum, and UNC Greensboro. Abbreviated versions included the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce and Greenhill Museum’s Art and Dialogue. The full version recently received a staged reading at the NC Women’s Theater Festival. The Road to Empathy, a piece about discrimination and The Other was presented at TEDxGreensboro in spring, 2018. The talk features a mash-up of My Son and Driving Miss Daisy.
Music credits include The New York Pie, published in conjunction with the Miles Davis Jazz Orchestra, a collaborated score for The Interrogator, aired on UNC-TV, Puss in Boots, an Indiana production which she also directed, Sidney in Focus, Not Strictly Vaudeville, and Outing Your Autistic Child, (choreographed and directed by Segal).
Related work includes media appearances as spokeswoman for the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra. Segal taught TV, Voice, and Diction for children in Houston, TX, and children’s acting in Greensboro, North Carolina. Before moving to Greensboro she wrote radio copy, and did radio, TV, and film work in Dallas, Houston, San Diego, and Indianapolis.
