An idea worth spreading
Given our divided nation, I often ponder what the Founders of this country envisioned for us all, and what the government's role would look like. Now I'm no legal scholar, so I'm merely speaking from a layman's perspective, but if one reads the Preamble of The Constitution, it clearly states the role of government. It may be described in broad, simple statements, but the two lines that stand out to me are these... "To ensure domestic tranquility". Now there's nothing tranquil about mass shootings, and weapons of mass destruction, (assault weapons are designed for this) to the public. The government representatives have a job to do and it's to "ensure domestic tranquility".
Their other charge is to "Promote the general welfare". This is a broad statement as well, but not that complicated to interpret if one is honest and insightful. What is general welfare? I don't think it's a stretch to conclude it might be referring to the basics to survival; health, education, environment, infrastructure, a living wage, shelter and adequate food. These are the essentials to life. I'm not saying the government must 'provide' these, but they can "promote" these through public policies.
It is painfully obvious that we as a people, need to come to terms and common ground on what the government's role is in our lives. We are a very large community of many different cultures and viewpoints but we are all Americans. It's time we approach our differences with logical minds and open hearts.
