Bio
After ‘Klami’ and ‘Alwâne’, Djazia Satour is back with a new album titled ‘Aswât’ (Voices). In it, Satour explores Algeria’s musical heritage in her typically subtle and original style. True to form, Satour’s original compositions are by shaped by the music industry’s most recent influences and borrow particularly from indie folk and pop-infused groove. However, she also clearly draws inspiration from the traditional music genres that defined her childhood in Algeria.
This resurgence of musical genres and Algerian rhythms is not just noticeable in Satour’s melodic accents and vocalisations (which are tinged with touches of sensitivity), it asserts itself in the presence of the banjo and mandole, whose chords and instrumental transitions throw out dazzling sparks. Borne aloft by the pirouetting wings of chaâbi and carried to its apotheosis by the bendir, Satour’s voice soars to the skies and resonates like an insistent reminder of one’s origins.
In a tone that is both intuitive and aloof, her lyrics evoke the themes of dispossession, exile, and wandering (‘Ida’, ‘Taleb Laman’, ‘Chouf Elil’) by awakening the recollections and love that stir up nostalgia for deserted places and the deceased (‘Souâl’, ‘Loun Liyam’, ‘Yama Tal’). So many voices that echo the turmoil of our world, where ‘The Melody of the Winds’ (Neghmat Erriah) intertwines with ‘cries and lamentations’. The best and only way they could make themselves heard is in Arabic, which all the songs on the album are written in.
Satour’s return to her musical roots is tinged with these emergences of the present, as if reality for once interfered in nostalgia and memory. This only goes to show that far from yielding to backward-looking temptations, Satour’s new album explores tradition to find new opportunities for invention.
