Bio
I am a multidisciplinary artist from Tenafly, New Jersey. My work ranges from large scale Land Art installations to studio paintings, drawings and sculpture. My synaesthesia informs and inspires all of my art. I attribute the diversity of my output to to a “population” residing inside of me who create and continue ongoing series. I like to think of my self as host of a boarding house with lodgers coming and going. Many of them compete for my time or in other words time with my human experience. I love this and feel as if I am accompanied throughout the day and night. I created a mini-documentary: “Jessica Anne Schwartz, Population” to help communicate what this is like and completed two artist’s books based on my synaesthesic response to the voices of Alan Watts and Oliver Sacks. In addition, an article recently ran in the Paris Review on my painting series Single Serving” by Lawrence Weschler. My work is held and exhibited in private and public collections.
My early childhood and synaesthesia drew me to the wonder of our brains and the amazing vastness of our perception. I am naturally drawn to patterns and appreciate all sciences for how they expose the infinite repetition throughout and across. Bearing witness to my father’s nine year battle with Glioblastoma and my mother’s struggle with Dementia sparked a vivid curiosity into neuroscience and biology. I try to study as much as I can on my own.
I approach everything I do as art form and as an opportunity to create, collaborate, learn and experience wonder. I care deeply for people and enjoy celebrating this amazing predicament of existing with kindness and generosity. I shy from meanness, violence, and noise. I don’t like being cold either. I delight in reading poetry, literature and philosophy and cooking for friends. My everyday activities include writing, swimming, yoga, making art and giving drawings to strangers.
I live and work in New York City.
